How physically alive you feel day to day
Being healthy and feeling alive are not quite the same thing. A person can have no obvious health problems and still move through most days feeling depleted, sluggish or physically flat. Another person can be managing physical limitations while experiencing periods of considerable energy and engagement.
Psychologists use the term subjective vitality to describe the experience of feeling alive and energetic. Richard Ryan and Christina Frederick, who developed one of the best-known measures of subjective vitality, described it as a positive feeling of aliveness and energy available to the self.
Bellamy's Vitality Signal is concerned with this lived experience. It asks how much usable physical energy and aliveness you tend to experience in your ordinary life, rather than how healthy, productive or physically fit you appear from the outside.
What is vitality?
Vitality is more specific than simply "having energy." Energy can describe alertness, physical capacity, motivation or even nervous activation. Vitality carries a positive quality: the sense that you have energy available for living.
This distinction becomes clearer when we consider states that can superficially resemble vitality. Stress can produce considerable activation. Caffeine can make someone more alert. Anxiety can make it difficult to sit still. A deadline can produce a burst of intense productivity. None necessarily creates the settled sense of physical aliveness captured by subjective vitality.
Vitality is also distinct from fitness. Cardiorespiratory fitness and muscular strength describe aspects of physical capacity. Vitality describes an experience. A highly trained person can feel exhausted and someone with modest fitness can wake feeling energetic and engaged.
Bellamy therefore treats vitality as information about how life currently feels in your body, not as a verdict on your physical condition.
Why vitality matters
Energy affects what is available to us psychologically as well as physically. When you have sufficient energy, ordinary activities require less negotiation. Going for a walk, seeing friends, cooking dinner or doing something after work can feel possible. When energy is consistently low, life can begin to contract around what absolutely needs to be done.
Research on subjective vitality has connected it with broader psychological wellbeing and motivational processes. Within Self-Determination Theory, vitality has often been treated as an indicator of eudaimonic wellbeing, reflecting positive functioning rather than simply the presence of pleasant emotion.
Ryan and Frederick's early work found subjective vitality to be associated with indicators of both psychological and physical wellbeing. Subsequent research has examined vitality in relation to autonomy, psychological need satisfaction, physical activity, exposure to nature and other aspects of daily life.
The important point is not that vitality causes a good life. Many of these relationships are reciprocal. A life containing satisfying activity, supportive relationships and adequate recovery may contribute to vitality, while having more available energy can make participating in those parts of life easier.
Where does vitality come from?
There is no single source.
Sleep is an obvious contributor. Insufficient or poor-quality sleep can affect alertness, mood and physical performance. Nutrition, illness, medication, hormonal changes, physical activity, pain and other physiological factors can also influence energy.
Psychological conditions matter too. Chronic stress can be exhausting. So can sustained cognitive demand, emotional strain or living for long periods without adequate recovery.
The environment can affect vitality as well. A series of studies on the vitalizing effects of nature found that being outdoors and in natural settings was associated with higher subjective vitality, an effect that held even when accounting for physical activity and social contact. Self-Determination Theory research also suggests that experiences supporting autonomy, competence and relatedness can contribute to feelings of vitality.
This makes vitality an interesting Signal because it sits at the intersection of body, psychology and lifestyle.
When vitality is low, the explanation may not be "I need more exercise." It may be that you need more sleep, less stress, medical attention, greater recovery, more satisfying activity or a combination of factors.
Physical activity and vitality
Movement has a particularly interesting relationship with energy because exercise requires energy while also having the potential to influence how energetic people feel.
Research has generally found physical activity to be associated with higher levels of energy and lower fatigue, although effects vary by population, activity and circumstance. A meta-analysis of single bouts of exercise found that one session tended to increase feelings of energy, with effects on fatigue that depended on intensity and on the person.
This can create a counterintuitive experience: when someone feels somewhat sluggish, movement may sometimes increase their sense of energy rather than deplete it.
But this should not be converted into the simplistic instruction to exercise whenever you feel tired. Fatigue can also be information that the body needs recovery. Someone who is sleep-deprived, ill, overtrained or otherwise depleted may not benefit from repeatedly treating exhaustion as something to push through.
The more useful skill is learning the difference between energy that needs activating and energy that needs restoring.
Vitality is not productivity
People often judge their energy by how much work it produces. A high-energy day is considered good because more gets done. A low-energy day is frustrating because productivity falls.
Vitality is broader than productive capacity.
You can have enough energy to complete your work and very little left for the rest of your life. You get through meetings, answer messages and meet deadlines, then arrive home with no desire to cook, socialize, move or engage with anything else.
From a performance perspective, you may appear to be functioning well. From a vitality perspective, something may be missing.
Bellamy is interested in whether you have energy not only to meet demands, but to participate in the parts of life that are not demands.
What stronger Vitality can look like
Stronger vitality usually means that you experience a reasonable amount of usable energy across ordinary days. This does not mean waking every morning enthusiastic or maintaining constant energy from morning until night.
Energy naturally fluctuates. Sleep, workload, menstrual cycles, stress, illness and countless other factors affect it.
The broader pattern is that you generally feel physically available for your life. Movement does not always feel burdensome. You have periods of genuine alertness. After necessary responsibilities are handled, some energy remains for things you choose.
You may also recover reasonably well. A demanding day makes you tired, but tiredness does not become the permanent background state of your life.
What lower Vitality can look like
Lower vitality can feel like moving through life with a consistently reduced battery. You can still function, but ordinary activities require more effort than they seem to require for other people.
You may structure your days around conserving energy. Plans after work feel difficult. Movement becomes less appealing. Weekends are spent recovering from the week rather than participating in things you enjoy.
For some people, low vitality presents more as flatness than obvious exhaustion. Nothing is dramatically wrong, but there is little physical eagerness towards life.
Importantly, persistent fatigue should not automatically be interpreted as a lifestyle or motivation problem. Low energy can accompany a wide range of medical conditions, sleep disorders, nutritional deficiencies, medication effects and mental health conditions. Significant, unexplained or persistent changes in energy can warrant professional assessment.

It can only help you notice that it is.
The difference between tired and depleted
Tiredness is normal. A full life should sometimes make you tired.
You can be pleasantly exhausted after hiking all day, staying up late with friends or completing something physically demanding. That tiredness exists alongside a sense that the energy was spent on something worthwhile.
Depletion feels different. Energy is repeatedly consumed without being adequately restored. Rest may stop feeling restorative because the demands resume faster than recovery can occur.

If your vitality is lower than you would like
The first question should not be How do I force myself to have more energy? It should be Where is my energy currently going?
Sometimes the answer is obvious. You are sleeping too little, working too much or recovering from an unusually difficult period. Sometimes it is less visible. Constant low-level stress, boredom, excessive screen time, lack of movement or a life containing very little genuinely enjoyable activity can all affect how energetic life feels.
It can also be useful to distinguish between physical tiredness and psychological resistance. There are days when the body genuinely needs rest and days when getting outside, moving or changing environments produces more energy than remaining still.
The objective is not to eliminate low-energy days. It is to understand the pattern well enough that you can respond to the actual source rather than repeatedly overriding it.
What progress looks like
Improved vitality does not necessarily look like becoming a high-energy person. Temperament differs and people have different natural rhythms.
Progress may simply mean having more energy available after work, waking rested more often, recovering more effectively after demanding periods or finding that movement and social plans require less effort to initiate.
It may also mean becoming more accurate about what gives and takes energy. You notice that certain forms of rest genuinely restore you while others leave you feeling flatter. You recognize which activities reliably make you feel more awake and which commitments consistently drain you.
The aim is not maximum energy.
It is enough energy to inhabit your life.
Something to consider
Think about an ordinary week rather than your best or worst day. Once you have completed the things you need to do, how much of you is left for the things you want to do?
That distinction can reveal more about vitality than asking whether you are technically tired.
Vitality is the physical sense that there is some energy available for curiosity, movement, connection, pleasure and participation. It is not about being switched on all the time. It is about feeling, with reasonable regularity, that you have enough life in you to take part in your own.
