How much you trust your body to try
Physical confidence is easy to confuse with being fit, coordinated or comfortable with how your body looks. They are related in some circumstances, but they are not the same thing.
You can be physically capable and still hesitate to use your body in unfamiliar ways. You can feel attractive and have little confidence in your balance, strength or coordination. You can also feel dissatisfied with your appearance while trusting your body completely to hike, swim, dance, lift, climb or learn a new sport.
At its core, Physical Confidence is about trust.
It is the degree to which you believe your body can participate, learn, adapt and respond when you ask something of it. It influences whether you approach physical experiences with curiosity or apprehension and whether unfamiliar movement feels like something you are allowed to try.
For Bellamy, a strong Physical Confidence Signal does not mean believing you will be good at everything. It means having enough trust in your body to participate without requiring certainty that you will succeed.
What is Physical Confidence?
Physical Confidence is a Bellamy Signal that draws on several established areas of psychological and movement research rather than representing one universally defined psychological construct.
One of the most relevant is physical self-efficacy.
Albert Bandura introduced self-efficacy as part of his broader social cognitive theory. Self-efficacy refers to people's beliefs about their capabilities to organize and execute the actions required to produce particular outcomes. Importantly, self-efficacy concerns perceived capability rather than objective ability.
Applied physically, the distinction is straightforward.
The question is not only:
Can my body do this?
It is also:
Do I believe my body can do this?
Researchers have subsequently studied related constructs including physical self-efficacy, exercise self-efficacy, perceived physical competence, physical self-concept and confidence in particular movement skills.
These concepts are not interchangeable, but together they demonstrate something important: people's beliefs about their physical capabilities influence how they approach physical activity.
Bellamy uses Physical Confidence as a broader, everyday concept encompassing the trust you place in your body's ability to participate and learn.
Confidence and competence are different
Confidence is a perception.
Competence is an ability.
Ideally, the two become reasonably well calibrated, but they do not always match.
Someone can have considerable physical competence and underestimate it. Another person can have relatively little experience and considerable confidence that they will figure things out.
Neither extreme is inherently ideal.
Physical confidence is most useful when it contains both trust and realism.
A confident beginner does not need to believe they can ski an advanced slope on their first day. They need enough confidence to believe they can put on skis, receive instruction, tolerate being inexperienced and gradually learn.
This distinction matters because people sometimes assume confidence should arrive after competence.
In reality, the two often develop together.
You need enough confidence to participate. Participation gives you opportunities to develop competence. Competence then provides evidence that can strengthen confidence.
If confidence is required to be complete before participation begins, the cycle may never start.
Why believing you can do something matters
Self-efficacy has become one of the most extensively studied concepts in behavioral psychology.
Bandura proposed that efficacy beliefs influence which activities people choose, how much effort they invest, how persistent they are when difficulties arise and how they respond emotionally to challenging situations.
Physical activity research has repeatedly found relationships between self-efficacy and exercise behavior. A major review of the correlates of physical activity, published in The Lancet, identified self-efficacy alongside age, sex, health status and motivation as among the individual-level factors reliably associated with whether people are active.
This does not mean believing you can exercise automatically makes you exercise.
Behavior is affected by time, health, money, environment, access, social support, responsibilities, habit and many other factors. Confidence operates within those circumstances.
But when an opportunity to move is available, believing that you are capable of participating changes the decision.
Imagine two people being invited to a beginner paddleboarding lesson.
Neither has done it before.
One thinks:
I've never tried that. It might take me a while to balance, but I'd probably figure it out.
The other thinks:
Absolutely not. I'd fall immediately. I'd look ridiculous.
The physical activity has not begun.
Physical confidence is already affecting participation.
Physical Confidence is not body confidence
Body image concerns how people perceive, think and feel about their bodies, including their appearance.
Physical Confidence is concerned more directly with what you believe your body can do.
The distinction can be substantial.
Someone may dislike being photographed in a swimsuit while feeling completely at home swimming in the sea.
Someone else may feel very attractive in athletic clothing but avoid a group fitness class because they are afraid they will not understand the movements.
Appearance confidence and physical confidence can influence each other, particularly in environments where bodies are visible and evaluated. But one cannot reliably be inferred from the other.
This distinction is useful because modern fitness culture often collapses physical wellbeing into appearance.
A body can be experienced as something to look at or something to live through.
Physical Confidence shifts attention towards the second.
Where Physical Confidence comes from
Bandura proposed several major sources through which efficacy beliefs develop. They are particularly useful for understanding physical confidence.
The first is mastery experience: actually doing something successfully.
You climb the hill you were not sure you could climb. You complete your first Pilates class. You learn to float. You carry the suitcase up the stairs. You realize you can run for ten minutes without stopping.
These experiences provide direct evidence of capability.
The second is vicarious experience. Seeing someone sufficiently similar to you perform an activity can change your estimate of whether you could do it too.
This is one reason representation matters in physical spaces. If every person participating appears younger, stronger, thinner, more experienced or otherwise unlike you, it may be harder to imagine yourself belonging there.
The third is verbal persuasion. Encouragement and credible feedback from coaches, teachers, friends or other people can affect perceived capability.
A good instructor saying, "You've got the strength for this. Let me show you how," can change how someone approaches a task.
The fourth involves physiological and emotional states. People interpret physical sensations when judging their capabilities.
A racing heart can be interpreted as:
My body is working hard.
or:
I can't handle this.
The sensation may be similar. The interpretation is different.
These sources help explain why physical confidence is neither entirely innate nor simply a matter of positive thinking. It is continually informed by experience.
Childhood can leave a surprisingly long physical memory
Many adults formed important beliefs about their bodies long before they had much control over the environments in which those beliefs developed.
School sport is an obvious example.
Children differ enormously in coordination, strength, speed, maturation, confidence and previous exposure to physical skills. Yet sport can make those differences highly visible.
Being selected last for a team, struggling to catch a ball while classmates watch, failing a fitness test or being repeatedly compared with more athletic peers can become more than an unpleasant moment.
It can contribute to a broader conclusion:
I'm bad at physical things.
Children who perform well can receive the opposite message.
You're athletic.
You're strong.
You're naturally good at this.
Those labels can influence later participation because they begin shaping expectations about what kinds of activities belong to you.
This does not mean every physically hesitant adult has a childhood explanation or that early experiences determine adult confidence. It means physical confidence develops through a history of interactions between ability, feedback, opportunity and interpretation.
Some of those conclusions deserve to be revisited.
Fear of looking incompetent
Sometimes the body itself is not what someone distrusts.
They distrust what will happen socially if the body gets something wrong.
Learning physical skills is visible.
You miss the ball. Lose your balance. Turn in the wrong direction. Forget the choreography. Use the machine incorrectly. Run more slowly than everyone else.
For someone sensitive to evaluation, this visibility can make physical learning unusually uncomfortable.
The problem then becomes difficult to separate.
Am I afraid my body cannot do this, or am I afraid of being seen while I learn how to do it?
The distinction matters because the second problem cannot be solved entirely through greater fitness.
A person may need experiences of being physically inexperienced without treating inexperience as humiliation.
What stronger Physical Confidence can look like
Stronger Physical Confidence often appears as willingness rather than certainty.
You are more likely to try unfamiliar activities because you assume that being new is manageable. You can receive physical instruction without interpreting correction as evidence that you are incapable. You understand that coordination and skill often improve through practice.
You also tend to have a reasonably realistic understanding of your body.
Trust does not require ignoring limitations. If something hurts, you can stop. If you need assistance, you can ask for it. If an activity genuinely exceeds your current capacity, you can recognize that without turning the limitation into a broader judgment about yourself.
You might be nervous before trying something difficult.
Physical confidence does not eliminate fear.
It changes what the fear means.
You can be nervous and still participate.
What lower Physical Confidence can look like
Lower Physical Confidence frequently appears before movement even begins.
You decline activities because you assume you will be bad at them. You watch rather than participate. You choose the easiest possible version even when you may be capable of more. You avoid situations where your physical ability will be visible to other people.
You may use identity statements that make these decisions feel inevitable:
I'm uncoordinated.
I have terrible balance.
I'm weak.
I can't run.
I've never been athletic.
Sometimes those statements accurately describe a current skill limitation.
The difficulty occurs when a specific limitation becomes a general theory of the body.
Being inexperienced at tennis does not establish that you are physically incapable.
Having poor upper-body strength today does not establish that you cannot become stronger.
Struggling with choreography does not mean your body cannot learn movement.
A lower Signal may therefore reflect limited confidence in what your body can currently do, limited confidence in what it can learn to do or both.
Confidence is often specific
People do not possess one universal quantity of physical confidence.
Someone can be extraordinarily confident on a bicycle and deeply uncomfortable in water. A dancer can trust their coordination but doubt their strength. A strong gym-goer can feel completely lost on a tennis court.
This is consistent with the broader concept of self-efficacy, which Bandura conceptualized as substantially domain- and task-specific.
Your Bellamy Signal therefore summarizes a broader pattern. It should not be interpreted as saying that you feel equally confident across every physical domain.
A more useful question is:
Where does my body already have my trust and where does that trust disappear?
The differences can be informative.
Injury, illness and aging can change the relationship
Physical confidence is not established once and retained permanently.
An injury can alter how predictable the body feels. Chronic pain can make previously automatic movements uncertain. Illness can change strength, stamina or balance. Pregnancy and postpartum recovery can create unfamiliar physical experiences. Aging can change what the body tolerates and how quickly it recovers.
These changes can require a recalibration of confidence.
Sometimes people become overly cautious after a physical setback. The body has recovered more than their confidence has.
At other times, confidence remains based on an earlier version of the body and needs to become more realistic.
Neither situation represents personal failure.
Physical confidence works best when it remains responsive to evidence.
The goal is not unquestioning faith in the body. It is an increasingly accurate and constructive relationship with its capabilities.
The importance of physical literacy
Another useful concept is physical literacy.
Definitions vary across the literature, and a systematic review of the concept found considerable inconsistency in how it has been defined and applied. Broadly, physical literacy concerns the motivation, confidence, physical competence, knowledge and understanding that support engagement in physical activity across life.
The concept is particularly valuable because it moves beyond the idea that sport belongs primarily to naturally athletic children or highly trained adults.
Physical skills can be learned.
Balance can improve. Strength can develop. Technique can be taught. Coordination can become more efficient. Knowledge makes unfamiliar environments easier to navigate.
The body is not simply something you discover the capabilities of once.
It is something capable of adaptation.
This does not mean every person can become equally skilled at every physical task. Genetics, health, disability, age, access and many other factors matter.
It means your current level of competence is not necessarily the final boundary of what your body can learn.
Physical confidence and independence
There is also a practical dimension to trusting your body.
Physical capability supports participation in ordinary life.
Carrying groceries. Getting up from the floor. Walking through an unfamiliar city. Climbing stairs. Lifting luggage. Playing with children. Navigating uneven ground. Recovering balance when you trip.
These activities are rarely discussed as athletic achievements.
They are forms of physical agency.
As people age, maintaining strength, balance and mobility becomes increasingly relevant to independence and everyday functioning. The Physical Activity Guidelines for Americans therefore recommend not only aerobic activity but muscle-strengthening activity at least twice a week, with the added recommendation that older adults include balance training in their weekly activity.
This gives physical confidence a significance beyond recreation.
Trusting your body to participate in life can affect the size of the life you feel comfortable entering.
When confidence becomes overconfidence
More Physical Confidence is not automatically better without limit.
Accurate confidence includes respect for risk.
Someone who substantially overestimates their ability may attempt activities without appropriate preparation, ignore safety guidance or push through signals that should prompt them to stop.
This is why Bellamy is interested in trust, not invulnerability.
A healthy relationship with physical confidence allows both statements to be true:
My body is capable of learning difficult things.
and
My body has limits worth respecting.
Confidence without awareness can become recklessness.
Awareness without confidence can become unnecessary restriction.
The useful territory lies between them.
If you struggle with Physical Confidence
The most reliable way to build confidence is generally not to wait until you feel confident.
Confidence needs evidence.
This is where mastery experiences become particularly useful. Choose a physical challenge that is sufficiently difficult to produce meaningful evidence but sufficiently achievable that you have a reasonable opportunity to succeed.
That could mean taking the beginner class rather than the advanced one, walking a route that previously felt intimidating, learning one swimming skill, practicing balance, gradually increasing resistance or asking an instructor to teach you how to use equipment you have been avoiding.
The scale matters.
Repeated manageable successes can provide more useful information than repeatedly placing yourself in situations that confirm the belief that physical activity is overwhelming.
Good instruction can also matter. Physical environments vary enormously in how they treat beginners. A teacher who explains clearly, offers appropriate progressions and normalizes learning can create a very different experience from an environment in which you constantly feel behind.
It may also help to separate performance from participation.
You do not have to be impressive for an experience to count.
You can ski badly and have skied.
You can finish last and have raced.
You can wobble and still be learning balance.
You can modify an exercise and still be training.
Participation creates the experiences from which confidence can eventually develop.
What progress looks like
Progress in Physical Confidence does not necessarily look like becoming fearless.
It may look like entering a class without checking beforehand whether everyone else will be better than you.
Trying an activity you previously assumed was not for you.
Asking someone to teach you instead of avoiding the situation.
Recognizing that being physically challenged is different from being physically incapable.
Trusting yourself to learn.
It can also mean becoming better at interpreting your body. You recognize fatigue without catastrophizing it. You distinguish exertion from pain. You know when to continue and when to stop.
Over time, the body becomes less like an object whose performance you evaluate from the outside and more like something you have accumulated experience using.
That experience creates evidence.
And evidence gives confidence somewhere to stand.
Something to notice
Pay attention to what happens when someone suggests a physical activity you have never tried.
Before deciding whether you actually want to do it, notice whether your mind immediately begins evaluating your capability.
I'd be terrible at that.
I wouldn't know what I'm doing.
Everyone else would be better than me.
I'd probably fall.
Or perhaps:
I've never done that. I'd try it.
The difference is not necessarily physical ability.
It may be the amount of uncertainty you require your body to resolve before you are willing to let it participate.
Physical Confidence is not believing that your body can do everything.
It is trusting that your body can try, learn, adapt and tell you where its limits are.
