ESSENTIAL READING
The premise is that most people approach their own direction as a search problem. There is a right answer, it exists, you have not found it yet, and the task is to figure out what it is.
Burnett and Evans think that framing is the mistake. Designers do not work that way. Faced with an ill-defined problem, a designer does not reason their way to the correct solution. They build something small, watch what happens and revise.
THE BOOK
Designing Your Life came out of a course the two of them teach at Stanford and reached a general readership in the mid-2010s. It is structured as a workbook with exercises in every chapter.
The tools are the point. A journal for tracking engagement and energy across ordinary activities, so you have data on what actually absorbs you rather than a theory about it. Three separate five-year plans, deliberately different from each other, including one for a life where money and other people's opinions are not factors. Small, cheap experiments to test a direction before committing to it, which they call prototyping.
THE AUTHORS
Bill Burnett runs the design program at Stanford and worked in product design, including at Apple. Dave Evans co-founded Electronic Arts and worked at Apple as well before moving into teaching.
Neither is a psychologist and the book does not pretend otherwise. What they bring is a working method from a field where nobody expects to solve an ill-defined problem by thinking harder about it.
THE CENTRAL IDEA
Two ideas carry the book.
The first is prototyping. Rather than deciding whether to change careers, you find the smallest possible version of the new thing and do it. Spend a day with someone who has the job. Take on a small project. Have three conversations. The purpose is not to commit and it is not to succeed. It is to generate real information, because your prediction about how something will feel is unreliable and doing a small version of it is not.
The second is what they call gravity problems: situations that are not actually problems because they cannot be acted on. The market for your field pays what it pays. You are the age you are. A gravity problem is not solvable, so treating it as one produces nothing but frustration. Their instruction is to accept it and design around it, and the value is in the sorting rather than the advice.
They are also good on dysfunctional beliefs, the assumptions that quietly constrain the whole exercise. That you should know your passion. That there is one right answer. That it is too late. Each is named and dismantled early, because none of the tools work while those are running.
The related point about passion is worth stating. Their position, which has support in the research literature, is that interest usually develops through competence and involvement rather than arriving fully formed in advance. Waiting to discover a passion before acting has the sequence backwards.
WHAT IT IS USEFUL FOR
It is the most practical book on this shelf for anyone stuck between options.
The specific stuck state it addresses well: you have thought about it for a long time, you have made lists, you have talked it through, and you are exactly where you started. That is a signal that thinking is not the constraint. The book's whole argument is that you cannot resolve it from the chair, and it gives you something to do instead.
It is also good for people who feel they have to get it right. Three parallel plans, held simultaneously, is a genuinely useful antidote to the belief that a life has one correct shape.
READ IT WITH THIS IN MIND
The book assumes a reader with room to maneuver. Prototyping requires time, and often money, and the ability to absorb a failed experiment. That is not everyone's situation, and the book does not engage much with the constraints of people who have less of both.
It is also a workbook. Read passively it will feel thin, because the value is entirely in doing the exercises. If you are not going to do them, this is not the book.
And the design metaphor has limits. A life is not a product, you are not outside it and some of what you would want to test cannot be prototyped at small scale.
IF YOU TAKE ONE THING
You cannot think your way to an answer about how something will feel.
Build the smallest possible version of it and find out.
